Shams & Tabrizi is the yoga, music, art, writing, and martial arts inspired ancient teachings, and theories of practice, by Neil Spencer.
It is named after the infamous meeting of the beloved Persian poet Rumi, and the mystical figure that was his teacher, Shams-e Tabrizi (شمس تبریزی.). Their first meeting went something like this:
"One day Rumi was reading next to a large stack of books. Shams Tabriz, passing by, asked him, 'What are you doing?' Rumi scoffingly replied, 'Something you cannot understand.' (This is knowledge that cannot be understood by the unlearned.) On hearing this, Shams threw the stack of books into a nearby pool of water. Rumi hastily rescued the books and to his surprise they were all dry. Rumi then asked Shams, 'What is this?' To which Shams replied, 'Mowlana, this is what you cannot understand.' (This is knowledge that cannot be understood by the learned.)"
After their meeting, they spent 40 days in seclusion together, from which Rumi emerged to create some of the most beautiful poetry the world has ever known.
Neil aims to inspire his students to believe in themselves, and be confident in their own abilities to achieve greatness through giving them inspiration to practice at their very best.
What's interesting, is that Rumi was known to be very fond of the moon in his poetry, the opposite of Shams - which translates to "sun" in arabic.
Neil aims to inspire his students to discover their own radiance through utilizing the best ideas and techniques of what committed practice looks and feels like, so that they too will shine as bright as the sun.
